Roulette Wheels: Its Rich History and Reputation In The Casino World
Of all the land based and online casino games being played, the most recognized game is Roulette with its wheels. The game of Roulette has influenced nearly all the casino games played in the world. You can see the Roulette wheel in many television game shows such as “Wheel of Fortune” and “The Price Is Right”. People associate Roulette wheels with luck, which may be reason why it’s such a famous casino game. Here’s a closer look at the history of the Roulette wheel:
The Roulette Wheel’s History
First off, you should understand that roulette is considered the oldest casino game. It was designed in France in the early 1700s that consisted of a mixture of Italy and England wheel games. These kinds of games were around long before the turn of the 18th century and the roulette game most people see today has stood the test of time. Present-day roulette was designed in France sometime in the late 18th century. In its present form, there is a space for the bank… the zero and double zero spaces. In the 19th century, the game made its way all around Europe, eventually making its way to United States. It’s here that the double zero spaces were designed on the roulette wheels.
There are many variations to games similar to Roulette especially when it comes to games that involve gambling; it’s only natural for games to change with the times and setting. After all, just one zero space is found on the Roulette wheel in Europe, which allow players to have a better chance of winning against the house. However, the American Roulette wheel has two spaces marked zero, which make it a bit more difficult to beat (38 to 1) chance to win against the house.
One more thing…when you look at the roulette, there are two distinct colors, black and red.
Players tend to identify the wheel to different things. For instance, it’s the international symbol for chance and fate. In the past, it was thought to be supernatural. This thought occurred during the early 19th century when the Blanc family arrived to play the game in Monte Carlo after their country of Germany had banned it. According to legend, Francois Blanc made a pact with the devil to get the secrets of the roulette game. The reasoning was that the sum of all 36 numbers of the Roulette wheel added to the “devil’s number” according to what the Bible says it is.
When people see a Roulette wheel today, they immediately think of casinos and gambling. Unlike other games, Roulette is the most basic game of probability there is to play. Some people may think it’s out of date and style but it’s certainly a symbol for chance and fate. |
